Some of you know that I am a bit of a interior design junkie. When I decorated my condo in Old Montreal, I went all out and created mood boards for every single room. Over the years, I put the mood boards aside and just shopped based on what inspired me but then when I took the boards out ages after buying certain pieces, I noticed how I was subconsciously influenced by the images I had pasted on the boards years before.

Now I am tasked with decorating our lovely apartment in Switzerland. This girl loves a good decoration challenge and let me tell you it is one since there are now TWO people involved with sometimes very different tastes. I might be in love with a certain coffee table or chair, but if the BF doesn’t like it, it’s a no go. So let’s take a look at some of the inspiration behind our new decoration and how we created the look for less. Because when you have to furnish an entire apartment, Ikea (that place you said you would never shop at now that you are a sophisticated mature adult) becomes your second home…

 OFFICE: THE INSPIRATION

This office is classy, modern but still warm thanks to the washed out wood floor, pretty patterned rug and delicate plants.

A pattern rug can make even the most classic rooms a bit more interesting.

I used the picture above to convince Robert that opting for a white desk with black legs was the best choice for an office that wouldn’t look too masculine or feminine. I’m pretty sure we’ll end up buying the Kallax shelving unit that is featured on the right.

Black and white just looks so chic, you can’t go wrong. I also love that with black and white you can get basic/inexpensive furniture and then glam it up with some pricier pieces like a nice lamp, cushion, carpet and even smaller accessories like cute card holders, paper weights, etc. Kate Spade has the prettiest office supplies that can add sparkle to even the dullest work space.

I don’t know why but I have a strange fantasy about having a rolling rack in my office. Probably because I once secretly wished I could be a hot shot stylist or maybe it’s just that I like the idea of having my favourite clothes on display. I also love the idea of shelving for shoes. Only the prettiest pairs of course.

THE WORK IN PROGRESS

ikea desk white chair, roche bobois kenzo sofa, home decor, interior decoration, interior design, style at home, home decor, decor ideas, decoration inspiration, sofa, modern design,

We started with this rug from Ikea which is kind of the opposite way I would usually decorate. I normally start with furniture and finish with accents like lamps and carpets but hey, when you see something you like that can be a good base to start from, trust your instinct. The desk top, legs and chair are also from Ikea.

LIVING ROOM: THE INSPIRATION

Ahhhh… visions of grandeur. If only our living room was the size of someone’s house, we could have this huge Roche Bobois sofa and lounge on it all day.

This layout is already a little more realistic. A slightly smaller space and there is actual furniture other than the couch. We still haven’t found a main unit that will act as a center piece but we like the idea of something in this shape. We found this OKO bookshelf and this Jamy bookshelf at Fly which might do the trick but we still aren’t 100% sold.

I am so in love with this bohemian living room! I’ve always had a thing for velvet couches and I’m so happy ours has a similar texture. I’ve been keeping an eye out for a low round table like this one so that it fits nicely with the low sofa.

The centerpiece of the living room: a crazy cool Kenzo sofa from Roche Bobois.

Still lots to do here like adding a rug, styling the bookshelf, finding a unit for the space behind the sofa (to put turn table, books, etc), getting proper lights and I would like to put a small coffee table like this one next to the larger sofa. Robert also wants to get more cushions for the Roche Bobois sofa so that we eventually have more seating areas.

BEDROOM: THE INSPIRATION

grey bedroom, blue bedroom, home decor, decoration, style, interior design

What I liked about this bedroom: a grey bed similar to ours, a nice chair for reading a good book, the touches of colour and texture that add warmth.

The above living room is what inspired the colour theme for our bedroom (lots of white and some pops of blue and yellow). Robert purchased this grey bed from Ikea (only avail in Europe) so I started researching how we could add some warmth to a bedroom that was all white with a touch of grey. I would have never thought of mixing blue, grey and yellow together but it works! The funny part is that we spotted this blue chair and printed rug at Ikea BEFORE seeing the above picture. Robert really liked the chair and I really loved the rug so when I found this photo we both agreed that pairing the two pieces together looked great and that this would be the colour composition for our bedroom.

THE WORK IN PROGRESS

bedroom, decoration, bed, carpet, rug, ikea, chair,

As you can see the room is still a bit bare. I would like to add a throw on the bed, perhaps a bookshelf or small coffee table and lamp next to the chair, some small plants or flowers by the window and a ceiling light (a chandelier maybe).

Up close shot of the gorgeous rug. If I spotted this on a blog, I would never think it was from Ikea. Goes to show you they do have some stylish and unique looking pieces. You just have to keep your eye out for them.

BEDSIDE: THE INSPIRATION

ikea white nightstand

I’m including this photo just for fun as we actually haven’t done anything to make the bedside look appealing. We just purchased the Ikea Hemnes nightstand in white (same as featured above) and were still trying to figure out how to style it. Robert prefers a table lamp while I’m inclined to go for a wall lamp like this Alang model. That way, we have more room to put beautiful books, magazines, candles or flowers.

Ah ah! Robert working away at assembling the Ikea nightstand. He’s such a trooper. He never gets impatient or looses it if he runs into “challenges” with a piece of furniture.

This table is from Pfister and we both fell in love with it when we spotted it in store. The price was a bit high so we looked around for a more affordable version but when we couldn’t find anything that we liked as much we decided to buy it.

HOME ACCENTS: THE INSPIRATION

Plants are a must for me as they add life and colour to a room. I’m currently swooning over succulents. They are just so cute and stylish!

Some green in the entryway for a welcoming feel. The table is from Pfister (not available online).

Bad photo, sorry (blame my old iphone 4 that can’t handle low lighting).

light, moroccan, home decor

This photo does not do this light justice. If you look at the first picture in this post that features many different Moroccan style lights, that gives you a better idea of the impact this piece has when you walk into our entrance. It’s gold which adds some warmth and glamour and the cutouts are reflected as funky shapes on the ceiling and walls.

So there you have it. That is the current state of our apartment. Still lots to work on and the key word here is PATIENCE. Decorating and finalizing a room can take years. That was the case for my condo in Montreal but in the end it looked gorgeous. The trick is to look for ideas in magazines and online (I’ve listed some of my favourite decoration inspiration sites below), set aside those pictures that really inspire you  (Pinterest is great for this) and then store them in your mental filling cabinet so that when you visit home decor shops, you have something to refer to. I am already excited to show you how our home continues to evolve and if you have any great decoration tips, magazines or websites please share them with us in the comment section below!
