Many people believe a fulfilling life is built through big moments and major milestones. But in truth, it’s the small, everyday choices that shape how we feel. Something as simple as learning how to plan your meals for the week can bring a surprising sense of ease and joy—because it aligns you with what truly matters, like caring for your health and your energy.
If you want healthy living to become a way of life, it asks for your time, your intention, and a willingness to gently integrate new habits into your routine.
And I’ll be honest with you—it’s a process. It took me years of trial and error to find a system that works for me. But once I did, it created a ripple effect in so many areas of my life.
Today, I want to share my meal planning ritual with you, in the hope that it supports you in caring for your body like the home that it is—and allows you to show up for all that you love with more energy and vitality.
If it’s not planned, it’s not real
Just like movement or meditation, we have to create space for it. Planning your meals is an act of self care —and it deserves a place in your calendar. I personally set a reminder on Friday evenings. When it pops up, I follow a simple two-step process:
Step 1
Look at the week ahead. Take a moment to review your schedule and assess how many meals you actually need to plan.
I like to write down the days of the week on a piece of paper, and under each day, I add “lunch” and “dinner.” From there, I consider:
When I’ll be home
When I might be out
When I may not need to cook
This simple exercise helps bring clarity and prevents over- or under-planning.
Step 2
Gather inspiration. This is the part I love most. I go through my favourite recipe sources—Pinterest (you’ll find my most used boards at the bottom of this post), my own Red Fairy Project recipes, saved articles, trusted blogs, and sometimes a good old-fashioned cookbook (my faves here). I choose meals that feel nourishing and exciting, then assign them to each lunch and dinner.
And a gentle reminder: check what you already have in your fridge. Let what’s already there guide some of your choices so nothing goes to waste.
Don’t forget the snack attack
Once my meals are planned, I create a simple grocery list and either shop that evening or the next day. One thing that truly supports consistency? Planning for snacks. Not from a place of restriction—but from nourishment.
Having healthy snacks on hand helps stabilize your energy and prevents those moments where you feel like grabbing whatever is closest.
Here are a few of my go-to options:
Hummus with carrots, peppers, or celery
Apple or banana with almond butter
A spinach and banana smoothie
Plain Greek yogurt with vanilla protein powder (fruit optional)
A small bowl of gluten-free cereal with almond milk and fruit
(And yes… I personally cannot live without snacks.)
Find what works for you
This is the system that works for me—but your rhythm may look different. The key is to be realistic about your needs, your schedule, and your energy. Build a system that supports your life—not one that feels like pressure. The goal isn’t perfection.
It’s presence.
It’s consistency.
It’s learning as you go.
If something isn’t working, give yourself permission to adjust. There’s no need to force what doesn’t feel aligned. And when you do veer off track (because you will, we all do), meet yourself with kindness. Whether that looks like an unplanned indulgence or a spontaneous stop at Poutine Ville—enjoy it, and simply begin again.
There’s no need for harsh self-talk. That voice doesn’t support your growth—it only keeps you stuck.
I’d love to hear from you! Did this help? Is there a topic you’d like me to explore next?
And if you try any of your own mindful meals, feel free to share them and tag @redfairyproject on Instagram or Facebook. I truly love seeing how you bring these practices into your life.
