I first discovered Lavaux last year when I was on the train heading to Lausanne. I was watching the scenery unfold very calmly when all of a sudden the landscape opened up to an infinite view of lush vineyards and crystal clear Lac Léman (for the full effect, check out the video I shot below).
I could tell everyone else on the train was also taken aback by this sight as I listened to the collective Ohs and Ahs (as well as pictures being snapped every few seconds). After that breathtaking experience, I knew I would have to come back to the region to discover Lavaux in all its glory.
Fast forward to August 2015 and I finally got my wishes fulfilled. Covering 800 hectares (with a 35 km hiking trail), Lavaux is the largest contiguous vineyard region in Switzerland, and its daringly constructed hillside terraces have been protected by UNESCO since 2007 (source: myswitzerland.com). Because of the size of the region and dad’s bum knee, we decided to focus on the area of Lutry and to take the Lavaux Express, a cute little train that takes you around the vineyards and makes a stop for wine tasting the most beautiful view.
After we had a good wander (and a few glasses of wine), we took the commuter train to Lausanne. Dad had never been and I thought he would enjoy the historical buildings and general beauty of the city.
They have the cuttest boutique in Lausanne called Cuppin’s that sells cupcakes, cupcake making accessories, jewelry, home decor and even clothing. I had to control myself not to buy these engraved spoons! Imagine the lovely foodie photos I could take with them…
The kid in me really gets a thrill out of the animated clock at Place de Palud that plays every hour. Just had to film it and share it with you guys.
We ended our day with a lovely supper by the lake and then hopped on the train back to Lucerne filled with precious memories and A LOT of pictures…
What a great day in Lausanne and the company couldn’t have been better. The wine wasn’t bad either.
I enjoyed it so much and even more so because I was able to share the experience with you dad. So lucky to be able to travel the world together! xx
