I realize that I’m not reinventing the wheel by focusing on neutrals for fall but considering that a smart fashion philosophy is to invest in good basics, chic neutral outerwear was a must to post this season. When you live in a country like Canada, having a few great coats in your wardrobe is a non-negotiable. Another important factor to consider is how the weather is not what is used to be (were December 15 and it’s raining!) so transition wear is key.
Below is a plethora of outerwear inspiration ranging from practical blacks to winter whites. Use this a a guide to see which shapes best suit you and find ideas on what you can wear with each style and colour of coat. Hint: it’s probably not with heels as shown below but in the name of fashion, let’s embrace the impractical fantasy.
IN THE NAVY
Last year, I bought this BCBG navy trench coat with leather sleeves. It was a total impulse purchase which is a bit crazy considering its price but I just had to have it. I knew it was an investment piece I would wear for years to come because of its classic shape and colour. Life lesson: it’s hard to go wrong with navy.
One detail I’m noticing on three out of these five coats is the large collars. It gives the coat nice proportions and slightly raised it adds that edge that is sometimes needed to jazz up a basic piece.
Some might say that in a season that is known to be grey and a bit dreary, wearing this conservative colour might not be ideal but I disagree. Grey is a nice alternative to black, it’s still easy to mix and match and goes well with every skin tone and hair colour. A hue that makes dressing easy and chic? No arguments here.
Camel is such a rich and warm colour. To quote Who What Wear, camel is “The colour that makes everything look more expensive.” Pairing it with black is ultra chic and as the examples show below you can dress it up or down based on your accessory selection.
Everyone is crazy for camel! The number of pictures of gorgeous camel coats I found when researching for this post made it hard to pick just a few favourites. It goes to show you that this wardrobe staple isn’t going anywhere…
I don’t know if it’s my mother that brainwashed me when I was younger (I do have vague memories of her saying she was NOT buying me clothing in cream or white because I would destroy it within a few
days hours) but wearing a white coat is something I would do in some fantasy world or maybe an alternate universe. Can you even imagine wearing a white coat with the winters we have here in Canada which involve dirty cars that you might brush against and slush that you’ll step in and splash on yourself? Still, let’s indulge in the dream if only for a few moments.
Okay. Now I want a white coat (sigh). Maybe I should just move to a difference climate. Who’s with me? Joking aside, I guess it’s somewhat realistic to consider wearing white early in the season with it’s not so messy out. Would you be courageous enough to wear this non-colour?
Let’s finish off being a little more practical shall we? Yes, black is basic and safe but it’s also chic. There’s a reason most fashionistas make it their main choice in their wardrobe. As you can see below, black is far from boring if you know how to style it (i.e. with a great bag or gold hardware).
As we wrap up this post, I have to admit that I wish I had a ton of shopping suggestions to go along with these beautiful inspirational images. It’s something that’s in the works for early 2016 and I can’t wait to be able to offer you that added value. Let me know if it’s something that would excite you as my mission is to give you what you need and not just be like all the other blogs out there.
Speaking of what you want and need, if you have any other comments or suggestions for the Red Fairy Project, I’m all ears. I am currently gathering ideas and working on a redesign for next year so getting your feedback would be greatly appreciated. After all, this space is for YOU and I aim to please. Wishing you a wonderful Wednesday! xoxo
