Almost everyone has heard of how powerful it is to be present in the now but how many of us practice this on a daily basis? I first discovered this new way of living about 8 years ago (thanks to the book A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle) when I was going through a crisis and it changed everything for me.
That was when I truly started living rather than always being in my head lost in thoughts, stuck in the past or obsessing about the future. Being fully present allowed me to see all the gifts that life was offering me despite being in a difficult period and that made me feel great joy in a moment of darkness. We cannot always control external factors but we can certainly become aware of our mindset and how we are living the present moment.
Last night, I did day 22 of the Deepak Chopra and Oprah meditation experience and in it they asked a question that was just what I needed to hear as I had been obsessing about a work related problem all evening: What is blocking you from enjoying the present moment? What a powerful question that can really put things in perspective.
In my case, I was trying to have a nice relaxing evening at home after a hard day of work but by focusing on this work issue (that I couldn’t do anything about at that time) I was ruining my precious R & R time. That meditation question gave me the jolt I needed to block some time in my calendar next week to tackle the issue that was on my mind and then release it.
Try to check in with yourself multiple times a day to see how you are feeling about the present moment and if you are doing something that is keeping you from enjoying it. Being aware of our thoughts (without judging them) is the first step to a more peaceful and happy life. Let me know how it goes my lovelies!
