You’ve probably read articles about “green” beauty products or you might even have seen some of my blog posts on the topic. Over the years, I’ve been educating myself on the chemicals we put on our body every day and now more than ever, it’s obvious that these ingredients can have a major impact on our health.
It’s not for nothing that many pregnant women start switching to more natural versions of their usual lotion, nail polish, shampoo, etc. What’s funny is that many of us wait until the life of another human being could be affected before we start considering making these changes.
That said, were not here to judge. It can be tricky to know what products should be avoided and which are healthier options and I totally understand how it can feel overwhelming to think about changing certain sacred beauty staples. I’ve slowly been converting to more natural products for years and the trick is to do it one item at a time.
WHY GO GREEN?
One of the most cherished items in your beauty cabinet is probably also the most toxic: your nail polish. Now I know that you are probably peeking at the beautiful product images below but before we get all glamourous, we need to get down and dirty with some key facts (A.K.A. why you should bother switching to more natural beauty products and stick with 3 or 5 free nail colours). The three worst ingredients present in your favourite nail colour are dibutyl phthalate, toluene, and formaldehyde.
These three ingredients, nicknamed the “toxic trio,” have been linked to asthma, cancer, and reproductive problems in peer-reviewed studies. Phthalates, some of which are banned in Europe but not in the U.S. or Canada, are used to make polish both flexible and chip resistant. Formaldehyde, which can be absorbed through nails and skin, is thought to be a carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Toxicology Program. Toluene is a skin and respiratory tract irritant.
Now that you know a little more, how do you proceed? Well of course the most natural and safest option is to go polish free but if were being realistic, that’s not going to happen for most of us. I feel naked without nail colour even if it’s just a discrete nude shade so tossing all my polishes is not a proper solution.
Enter Deborah Lippmann the go-to manicurist for the most fashionable magazines and renowned fashion houses from Vogue, InStyle, W, Vanity Fair and ELLE to Donna Karan, Rodarte, Narciso Rodriguez, Marchesa and Versace to name a few. After years of experience in the industry, her eponymous line of lacquers and treatments for nails, hands and feet is as coveted as her incredible talent.
WHY I AM A DEBORAH LIPPMANN DEVOTEE
First, her colours are the most beautiful on the market (yes, even compared to Chanel whom I find is hard to beat). Second, Deborah Lippman products are not just 3-free, they are 5-free which is the best option for us mani loving green glamouristas. Her products contain no Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, Camphor or DBP (Dibutyl Phthalate).
In addition to this, they are not tested on animals which is a must for any beauty brand I use. And finally, at $20-22 CAD compared to $27 for Chanel (that is only 3-free and is also animal-tested), any budget smart beauty queen can do the math and see that it’s a win/win situation all the way.
Now that we have covered why you need to discover Deborah Lippmann nail polishes, here is the what. As in what you should buy when you next feel like indulging in a new nail colour. Starting with a few fun limited edition collections:
NEW YORK MARQUEE COLLECTION
Lights, camera, glamour! This fall, deborah lippmann is tipping her hat to New York City and singing an ode to Art Deco with her new collection – New York Marquee. From Bowery to Broadway, each nail lacquer reflects the ever-dazzling sights, sounds, and spirit of the city. Inspired by 1940’s luxury and vintage fabrics, the collection of six colors employs an innovative, new luxe chrome finish.
